In the darkness of the night, a graffiti artist managed to make Israel’s separation barrier in the West Bank town of Bethlehem — already considered the world’s most contentious wall — more controversial with a mural of President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharing a kiss.

Speaking to Reuters with his face concealed under a headdress, the artist said his works were memes to draw attention to particular issues or phenomenon. Lushsux hopes that his painting would draw attention to Palestinians stuck in “an indoor prison”.

“The wall is a message in itself”, the man, who said he painted the mural overnight, told Reuters. ”I don’t need to write ‘Free Palestine’ or something like that, something really direct … that people will ignore.

Lushsux’s graffiti, which often features world leaders and celebrities, is a particular attraction for locals and tourists, who’ve posted photos with the murals on social media. His murals take three to four hours to paint, and he prefers to paint overnight to avoid being disrupted, according to Israeli newspaper Haartez.

The Bethlehem wall has become a showcase of protest art voicing Palestinians’ fears that Israel’s West Bank fence-and-concrete barrier is a land grab that may deny them a state. Israelis deem the project a bulwark against Palestinian attack.

Lushsux’s giant graffiti, often featuring world leaders and famous celebrities, have become an attraction for both locals and tourists who need to cross the barrier in order to enter Bethlehem from Jerusalem. On the concrete barricades erected by Israel around parts of Bethlehem, in the occupied West Bank, giant spray-painted images of Trump have given constricted Palestinians some comic relief.

“I’m going to build you a brother,” the U.S. leader tells the wall in one mural. In another, he hugs an Israeli army watch-tower, with heart-shaped emojis added alongside paint splashes and soot stains left by Palestinian demonstrations.

Réalisé durant la nuit, à Bethléem, un nouveau graffiti orne le mur de béton qui sépare la Cisjordanie d’Israël. Il montre un baiser entre le Premier ministre Benjamin Netanyahu et le président américain Donald Trump.

Il est signé de l’artiste australien Lushsux, qui aurait peint d’autres œuvres pro-palestiniennes. Cette nouvelle œuvre montre les deux hommes politiques en train de s’échanger un baiser bien particulier avec un petit dialogue affectueux. Cette parcelle du mur de séparation est devenue un espace où les artistes de rue s’expriment pour attirer l’attention du monde entier.

Sur le graffiti, Netanyahu dit « merci pour le mur, Trump chéri », et Trump répond « Bébé, ton pays et toi passeront toujours en premier mon amour. »

“Le mur est un message en lui-même. Je n’ai pas besoin d’écrire ‘Palestine libre’ pour que l’on comprenne que des gens sont coincés ici”, dit Lushsux.

D’où on y voit des touristes posent devant le mur et ce graffiti tout comme ceux d’autres artistes  dont certains célèbres, comme Bansky qui ont tenu, eux aussi, à exprimer leur soutien au peuple palestinien.

Le mur de Bethléem est devenu une vitrine d’art de protestation par le fait d’y exprimer les craintes des Palestiniens. Israël a commencé en 2002, en pleine Intifada, le soulèvement palestinien, à construire ce mur censé le protéger des attaques venues de Cisjordanie et devant atteindre à terme 712 km.

Depuis le début de sa construction, le mur de séparation érigé par le gouvernement israélien est un véritable espace d’expression où Palestiniens et étrangers donnent libre cours à leur colère et leur désir de paix. Des graffitis ont ainsi fleuri sur ce mur, que ses détracteurs ont rebaptisé “le mur de la honte”, alors qu’Israéliens et nombre de Palestiniens veulent qu’il reste gris… pour des raisons très différentes.
