Innovation and start-ups: Used Coffee Grounds Turned Into A Renewable Energy Source


Coffee is one of the globe’s largest agricultural commodities, with about 8bn kilograms (more than 16bn lbs) grown annually worldwide. That’s a lot of coffee – and a lot of leftover coffee grounds, most of which ends up in landfills or, in a best-case scenario, as a soil conditioner in someone’s garden.
Soluble coffee has been reported as a richsource of antioxidants, the consumption of which may prevent diseases caused by oxidative damage.Through a little bit of research the founder of Bio-Bean, Arthur Kay ,taught that coffee has a higher caloric value than wood.  figured out how to compress the grounds into bio-fuel pellets.
As it has been reported on the Guardian, companies such as Starbucks and Nestle, for example, are already putting used coffee grounds to work, while researchers believe that oil from coffee grounds could end up contributing tens of millions of liters of biodiesel to the global fuel supply.

UK-based clean tech company bio-bean has industrialized the process of turning used coffee grounds into sustainable biofuels and biochemicals. Bio-bean works within the existing energy and waste infrastructure to develop products and solutions that displace conventional fuels and chemicals.

The Telegraph reports that Bio-Bean has contracts to collect used coffee grounds from cafes, coffee factories, and airports, all of whom are saving a pretty penny in disposal fees (£154 per ton, around $225). Before being turned into biofuel, the coffee refuse is stripped of the oils in order to keep the bricks from smelling like coffee when burned. “Some people think this is a shame but others don’t want their home to smell like Starbucks,” Kay states.

Bio-Bean, now three year old company,  reprocesses about 10% of all the coffee grounds in the UK — about 50,000 tons — into pellets every year. That’s enough to heat about 15,000 homes according to its founder. The company produces biomass pellets and recently introduced Coffee Logs, carbon neutral biomass briquettes that can fuel homes and appliances, such as wood-fire stoves and BBQs. It has also undertaken extensive research and development into the commercial application of biodiesel from waste coffee grounds.

Bio-bean sells its carbon-neutral clean fuel to local businesses and aims to eventually help power the same coffee shops that supplied the grounds.

In Joure, in the Netherlands, Veolia and Douwe Egberts Master Blenders have developed a solution for reusing coffee grounds to produce steam, and thus reduce the coffee company’s consumption of natural gas.

Veolia engineers set out to meet this challenge by developing a combustion system unlike any other in the world, in which the spent coffee grounds from the production process are burned to generate the steam needed to operate the plant. The system has enabled the plant to reduce its CO2 emissions by 70%.

  1. Renewable Poop power: Toyota using human waste based fuel to drive its new electric car

Toyota says it has the solution for unlimited clean energy Toyota is going to visit your toilets, literally  one of those days, scooping up human poop to create renewable hydrogen fuel to power its new electric car.

The use of human waste is expected to solve the motor giant’s ‘chicken or the egg’ problem, as described by Yoshikazu Tanaka, chief engineer of the Toyota’s hydrogen fuel cell car,the Mirai. According to Quartz, Hydrogen fuel cell cars could help solve the global warming crisis, but nobody wants to buy them : no one wants to purchase hydrogen cars because there are no hydrogen fuel stations, and nobody wants to build hydrogen fuel stations because there are no hydrogen cars.

Toyota says its bid to help the global warming crisis has not proven successful as nobody wants to buy a hydrogen car when there are no hydrogen fuel stations and no one wants to build a hydrogen fuel station when there are no hydrogen cars.

“It’s not a new or advanced technology,” says Marc Melaina, a senior engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Denver. “In India, they have loads of biogas plants in villages and such that are just part of their energy infrastructure.”

Using wastewater is arguably the greenest way to make hydrogen, especially for big cities, where there are a lot of people who produce a lot of sewage, and most of that sewage, after it’s been treated, is discarded. In the case of sewage sludge, it’s usually dumped in landfills, and in the case of biogas it’s most often burnt. In other words, there’s no downside to using it to produce hydrogen instead. “They have to treat the water, and biogas is a natural byproduct of that process,” Melaina says. “You can burn it, you can turn it into electricity or you can turn it into hydrogen.”

The automaker is now producing this faeces based fuel in a wastewater treatment plant in Fukuoka, Japan, according to Quartz.

The sewage is separated into solids and liquid. The solid waste is called sewage sludge. Microorganisms are then added to the mix  to break down the solid waste, creating biogas – about 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide.

The CO₂ is filtered out and water vapor is added, creating hydrogen and more CO₂. Workers extract the remaining CO₂ resulting in just pure hydrogen.

2. Obama loves Palestine :Barack Obama tells Israel it ‘cannot permanently occupy and settle Palestinian land’

According to Reuters  and Jpost.Com ,the White House is disappointed in the lack of progress in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process during US President Barack Obama’s eight-year administration, said US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro on Thursday.

 

Barack Obama has told Israel it cannot permanently occupy and settle on Palestinian land in a speech to the United Nations.

The US president said both sides would benefit if Israel recognised it cannot permanently occupy the land and if Palestinians rejected incitement and recognised Israel’s legitimacy.

“Surely Israelis and Palestinians will be better off if Palestinians reject incitement and recognize the legitimacy of Israel,” he said on Tuesday.

“But Israel must recognise that it cannot permanently occupy and settle Palestinian land.”

Following his speech, the president will raise concerns about Israeli settlement activity in Arab lands during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in New York on Wednesday.

This last statement of the failed US president even for the Black people living in the United States, comes shortly after the recent $38 billion promised aid package to Israel, apportioned each year as $3.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing and $500 million in missile defense assistance over the course of 10 years, as an “unshakable commitment to Israel’s security.” which undeniably will renforce West Bank’s occupation and settlements which is promoted through some media.
